FAMILY / APP RATING CHECK

Before a Kid Downloads an AI Companion App: The Reality Check.

An app-store age rating is a floor, not a guarantee. The check reads what the app actually does — persona, chat, image features, payments — before it lands on a kid's device.

Why the rating is a floor

An app-store rating mostly reflects self-reported content, not what an AI companion with a warm persona, image generation, and chat actually exposes a child to. Two apps with the same rating can be very different experiences.

The real reading is the feature list: the persona's warmth, whether chat is unmoderated, whether images can be generated or edited, whether payments exist, and what parent controls actually do. Those decide fit for a specific kid, at a specific age.

The protocol

  1. Review the app's features: persona, chat, images, payments, and controls.
  2. Read the age-fit basis: what each feature means for a kid.
  3. Match it to your specific child's age and readiness, not the rating alone.
  4. If it does not fit, choose a different app or use the parent controls to narrow it.

What the tool does

Review an AI companion app's features and get an age-fit reading with the feature basis shown. It runs in this browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Limit first: This is a feature-reading aid, not a substitute for your judgment about your own child, and not a guarantee about any app's behavior. Verify against the current app listing.

One human next step

Check the parent controls before download, and revisit the decision as the child ages. Report apps that market adult features to children to the FTC.

Research log and safety checks

AI-assist path: not applicable — the feature list is public and the fit judgment belongs to the parent; a model layer would add nothing but opacity. §6.10: not a frontier-pace topic.

§0.5 protection result: category is family-teen-safety; crisis-adjacent: no; fear/urgency/scarcity toolkit used: no. The protective function is free and the paid feature is convenience only.
