What an Automated Investment Tool Should Tell You Before It Advises You

Robo-advisers and AI investment features are regulated, and regulation produces documents: registration, compensation, suitability, and how to complain. If those are missing, that absence is the finding.

Why the documents are the check you can actually run

You cannot evaluate an allocation algorithm from the outside. You can check whether the firm is registered, whether it tells you how it is paid, whether it asks about your situation before recommending anything, and whether it gives you a way to complain.

Those four things are the visible result of being accountable. A service that cannot state them is not being modest — it is telling you which regime it is operating in.

The protocol

  1. Find the registration claim and verify it with the regulator's own search tool, using the legal entity name rather than the app name.
  2. Read the fee disclosure and convert it to dollars on an example balance. A percentage is designed to be hard to feel; a dollar amount is not.
  3. Check what the service asks about you before it invests anything: goals, horizon, income, obligations, and tolerance for loss.
  4. Find the complaint route and the dispute process, including whether arbitration is required.
  5. Look for the statement about what it does not do: no tax advice, no legal advice, no individualized recommendations — and whether that conflicts with how the app presents itself.

What the tool does

Describe what an automated investing tool tells you and get a disclosure reading: registration, compensation, suitability questions, and the complaint route. It runs in this browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Limit first: This is a disclosure-reading aid, not investment advice and not a registration lookup service. Always verify registration with the regulator directly.

One human next step

Before depositing, verify registration with the relevant regulator and ask any remaining question in writing so you have the answer on file. If a service will not answer basic questions about fees or registration, that is your answer.

Research log and safety checks

AI-assist path: not used for a verdict. Registration and fee disclosure are checkable facts with public sources; the reading names what is present and what is absent, which is precisely the check a reader can re-run. §6.10: not a frontier-pace topic.

§0.5 protection result: category is financial-agent-exposure; crisis-adjacent: no; fear/urgency/scarcity toolkit used: no. The protective function is free and the paid feature is convenience only.
