ELDER / RECURRING CHARGES

Small Monthly Charges Are Quietly Leaving an Account

Subscriptions, app purchases, and 'AI assistant' services accumulate on an older adult's account, often with a caregiver paying the bill. An audit finds them before they compound.

Why these charges hide in plain sight

Statements label charges with abbreviations, and the amounts look like ordinary utilities. Totalling them by merchant is what reveals the pattern.

The goal is an organised, respectful conversation about a real number, not a loss of financial independence.

The protocol

  1. With permission, list the last three months of charges from the account and card statements.
  2. Group them by merchant and mark anything unrecognised, duplicated, or renewed.
  3. Bring the list to the person and decide together: keep, cancel, or investigate.
  4. Cancel the decided ones, using the app or the provider's written process.
  5. Record the cancellation references and check the next statement for the change.

Cost and free path

Cost: Free: one complete run in this browser, no account. Optional $4 one-time unlock allows unlimited runs of this tool on this browser. The free path and safety guidance never require payment.

Free path, in order (no cost):

  1. The bank's own fraud and dispute line
  2. AARP Fraud Watch Network helpline — free guidance for older adults and families
  3. 211 for local caregiver-support services

What this cannot do: It cannot confirm a caller's identity, recover funds, or make decisions on someone's behalf.

One human next step

If a charge cannot be cancelled or looks fraudulent, call the bank and, if needed, the AARP Fraud Watch Network helpline; a caregiver can help by being on the call only with the account holder's permission.
