Why family emergency calls use staged panic and voice audio

Criminals use short audio snippets from social videos or emotional scripts to induce immediate panic, demanding instant wire or transfer payment while preventing you from hanging up.

Having a predetermined family protocol, calling the person directly on another phone, and asking a private family verification question defeats the scam without risking safety.

The protocol

  1. Stay on the call but do not send money, gift cards, or wire transfers.
  2. Signal someone nearby to call the family member directly on a separate phone.
  3. Ask the caller a question only your real family member would know (family callback code or private fact).
  4. Attempt to contact the person's school, workplace, or friends independently.
  5. If you cannot reach the person and genuinely believe they are in danger, dial 911 immediately.
