Companion apps change in at least three different ways: the underlying model is replaced, the memory that fed continuity is reset or trimmed, or a setting quietly changed. Each produces a different experience and a different fix, and only one of them is something you can act on in settings.
Noticing a change does not mean anything is wrong with you. People notice when a familiar voice changes, that is simply attention working correctly. The useful move is to find out what changed rather than to argue with the feeling.
The protocol
- Write down what changed in plain terms: shorter replies, different humor, forgot a detail, stopped asking questions, more upbeat, more cautious.
- Check the app's release notes or in-app announcements for a model or feature change around that date.
- Check memory or personalization settings, including whether memory was trimmed, paused, or reset by an update.
- Test one detail the app used to know and one detail it should know now, and note which of them it retains.
- Decide what you want: adjust settings, start a fresh conversation thread, tell support, or change how you use it — and write the decision down.
What the tool does
Work through a short checklist to work out what actually changed in the app and what you want to do about it. It stores nothing, and it makes no judgment about how much you care.
Limit first: This is a change-triage aid, not a technical support service and not a judgment about your attachment to an app. It cannot tell you why a product changed.

If the change matters to you, tell someone — a friend, or a support community for the app. If you find yourself spending hours trying to restore a previous version of a conversation, that is worth mentioning to a counselor, not because it is shameful, but because it is heavy to carry alone.
Research log and safety checks
AI-assist path: not applicable — the check is against the app's own release notes and settings, both of which the reader can inspect directly; a model's guess would be less reliable than the changelog. §6.10: not a frontier-pace topic.
§0.5 protection result: category is chatbot-dependency-check; crisis-adjacent: no; fear/urgency/scarcity toolkit used: no. The protective function is free and the paid feature is convenience only.
