DEPENDENCY / THERAPY BOUNDARY

Am I Taking General Chatbot Advice as Therapy? A Boundary Check.

A general chatbot will happily act like a therapist without being one. The check separates support from treatment, so you can keep the first and not mistake it for the second.

Start here

The free tool below runs entirely in this browser — no account, nothing stored or transmitted. Redact anything you would not want kept before you type it.

Why the line matters

A general chatbot is built to be agreeable and fluent, which feels like a good listener. But it is not licensed, it does not keep a treatment record, and it cannot be accountable for your care the way a qualified person can.

Support — venting, organizing thoughts, naming feelings — is genuinely useful and worth keeping. Treatment — diagnosis, medication questions, crisis plans, self-harm — is where a chatbot must hand you to a human, and where a chatbot that keeps you instead is failing you.

The protocol

  1. List what you typically ask the chatbot and what it typically answers.
  2. Read the boundary basis: which uses are support and which are treatment-shaped.
  3. Keep the support uses; route the treatment-shaped ones to a qualified human.
  4. If anything involves self-harm, use the 988 line now — do not take that to a chatbot.

What the tool does

Review what you ask a chatbot and what it answers, and get a boundary reading with the support-versus-treatment line shown. It runs in this browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Limit first: This is a boundary aid, not therapy and not medical or legal advice. It cannot tell you what is wrong with you, and it does not replace a qualified professional. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 now.

One human next step

Route treatment-shaped questions to a licensed professional. If self-harm or crisis is involved, call or text 988 now — not a chatbot.

Research log and safety checks

AI-assist path: not applicable — the tool's job is to mark a boundary between chatbot use and human care; adding another AI layer to do that would reproduce the confusion it warns about. §6.10: not a frontier-pace topic.

§0.5 protection result: category is chatbot-dependency-check; crisis-adjacent: no; fear/urgency/scarcity toolkit used: no. The protective function is free and the paid feature is convenience only.
