WORK / TOOL CLAIMS

The New AI Tool Is Supposed to Save You Hours. Audit the Claim Against Your Week.

Tool rollouts arrive with a headline number — hours saved, tasks automated — and those numbers come from someone else's workflow. A short audit shows what the tool actually replaces in yours.

Why the claim and your job are different instruments

Productivity claims are usually measured on a specific task — drafting, summarizing, tagging — with clean inputs and someone who knows the tool. Your week contains interruptions, handoffs, and reviews, which is where most of the time actually sits.

Measuring it yourself is not resistance; it is the professional version of the claim. Knowing which parts of your work the tool genuinely accelerates is also what makes your account of your own job credible in reviews and reorganizations.

The protocol

  1. Write down which of your tasks the tool touches, and which it does not. Most jobs have a long tail the tool never sees.
  2. For two weeks, note time on the touched tasks and what the tool changed: drafts started, reviews shortened, handoffs skipped or added.
  3. Include the adds: prompting, checking output, correcting tone, and the review step that exists because the output might be wrong.
  4. Compare honestly. A small saving on a frequent task is a real result; a large saving on a rare one is not.
  5. Bring the numbers to your next check-in as your own measurement, with the caveat that two weeks is a short sample.

What the tool does

Map the tool against your actual week and build a two-week comparison you can take to a check-in. It runs in this browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Limit first: This is a measurement aid, not an evaluation of any tool or of your performance. Two weeks is a short sample and workloads vary.

One human next step

If the tool is being credited with savings your team does not see, raise it with the number you measured rather than the feeling. If it genuinely removed part of your role, that is the moment to ask about the next task you want to take on.

Research log and safety checks

AI-assist path: not used for a verdict. The measurement has to be the reader's own two-week log; a model summarizing their work would insert exactly the vendor-style estimate the audit exists to replace. §6.10: not a frontier-pace topic.

§0.5 protection result: category is job-skill-disruption; crisis-adjacent: no; fear/urgency/scarcity toolkit used: no. The protective function is free and the paid feature is convenience only.
