WORK / MOVING SIDEWAYS

Before You Look Outside, Map the Move Inside Your Own Company

The fastest route out of an exposed role is often a role you can see from where you sit: adjacent work, different systems, more judgment. A short internal plan uses information an outside applicant cannot get.

Why the inside move is underrated

You already know which teams are growing, which manager people want to work for, and where the messy judgment work sits. An outside candidate spends months learning what you can find out in one coffee.

Internal moves also survive scrutiny: you keep your tenure, your benefits, and your reputation, and a hiring manager can ask about you rather than guess. That changes the risk of the move substantially.

The protocol

  1. Name three adjacent roles or teams whose work depends on judgment, relationships, or exception handling rather than volume.
  2. For each, note what you already do that overlaps, and the one skill you would need.
  3. Talk to one person doing the work — not to apply, just to find out what the week actually looks like.
  4. Talk to your manager about direction rather than departure: the task you want to own, the skill you want to build, the team you are curious about.
  5. Set a date to ask for a specific move, a shadowing week, or a project that puts you on the other team's radar.

What the tool does

Build a short internal mobility plan: the adjacent role, the conversations, the gap to close, and the date you ask. It runs in this browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Limit first: This is a planning aid, not career advice for your specific situation and not a promise about internal opportunities. Policies differ by employer and country.

One human next step

Have the first conversation this month — with someone doing the job, not about it. If your company has an internal mobility or development policy, check what it actually allows before you assume you have to leave to grow.
