SCAM / FAKE RECRUITER

The Recruiter Passed You With AI. Then Asked for Equipment Money

Synthetic recruiters pass video screens with generated faces, then ask the candidate to pay a deposit, buy equipment, or submit banking details for 'payroll setup'.

Why a passed AI interview is not a verified employer

A recruiter can now run a screening call with a synthetic face and a model-written script, so 'we met you on video' no longer establishes that a real company exists.

Legitimate employers do not ask a candidate to front equipment, training, or onboarding costs, and they can be checked against a registered business address and a named human.

The protocol

  1. Write down the exact job title, employer name, domain, and the person who interviewed you.
  2. Search the company's registration and address independently — not through the link you were sent.
  3. Ask for the offer, the role's reporting line, and payroll contact in writing on company letterhead.
  4. Refuse any deposit, equipment purchase, gift-card task, or 'overpayment refund' request.
  5. Record the request, then report it to the platform, the FTC, and your state attorney general.

Automated decision this documents: synthetic-face video screening used to establish credibility

Free path, in order (no cost):

  1. FTC — ReportFraud.ftc.gov (report the posting and the payment request)
  2. Your state attorney general's consumer protection division (usa.gov/state-attorney-general)
  3. The impersonated company's own careers or security contact, reached through its main website

What this cannot do: It cannot recover money, confirm an identity, or prove that a message, call, or payment request is fraudulent.
