CHATBOT / GRIEF

A Chatbot Is Available at 3 a.m. That Is Exactly the Risk

Grief support is one of the most common reasons people talk to a chatbot for hours. A boundary plan keeps what helps while restoring the parts of support that only people provide.

Why the chatbot is a genuinely good listener and a bad substitute

Availability without limits is the feature and the trap: the conversation never gets tired, never changes the subject, and never notices the hour.

Grief does not need to be pathologised, and wanting to talk at night is normal. What helps is a plan that keeps the honest parts and adds a human anchor.

The protocol

  1. Write down what you actually get from the conversations — company, memory, a voice to think with.
  2. Identify one human anchor: a friend, a bereavement group, a faith or community contact, a counsellor.
  3. Set one boundary you can keep — a time window, a session length, or a topic you keep for people.
  4. Decide what you will do when you notice the conversation is replacing sleep or company.
  5. Review after a week; adjust the boundary rather than abandoning the plan.

What the tool does

Build a grief-support boundary plan It runs locally in this browser and sends nothing.

Limit first: This is a planning and record-keeping aid, not therapy, medical advice or crisis support. If you are in crisis, contact a qualified human first.

Free path, in order (no cost):

  3. 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, free, 24 hours, for any acute distress

What this cannot do: It cannot decide the outcome for you.
