DEBT / CEASE CONTACT

Ask Them to Stop Contacting You — in Writing, With Proof

A written cease-communication request limits how and where a collector can contact you, and its arrival date matters. The record is the delivery, not the intention.

Why a phone request is easy to ignore

Responsibilities attach when the request is received in writing, and a collector that keeps calling after receipt creates the evidence itself.

You can still be sued, and the debt does not disappear — the request changes the contact, not the obligation. That is worth stating plainly.

The protocol

  1. Write the request plainly: identify the account and say all contact must be in writing.
  2. Send it by a method with tracking, and keep the receipt and the copy.
  3. Note the date it was received and any contact after that date.
  4. If calls continue, log them and add them to the same record.
  5. Escalate with the log if the request is not respected.

What the tool does

Build a cease-contact letter record It runs locally in this browser and sends nothing.

Limit first: This is a record-keeping and dispute-drafting aid, not legal or financial advice. It cannot cancel a debt, stop all collection calls, or guarantee that a dispute is upheld.

Cost and free path

Cost: Free: one complete run in this browser, no account. Optional $4 one-time unlock allows unlimited runs of this tool on this browser. The free path and safety guidance never require payment.

Rule status (mixed route): Status, 2026-10-03: cease-communication rules under Regulation F are in force; a written request changes how they may contact you, not whether the debt exists, and narrow exceptions still permit contact.

Automated decision this documents: automated collection contact scheduling and consent tracking

Free path, in order (no cost):

  1. CFPB's debt-collection complaint route
  2. Your state attorney general's consumer division
  3. NACA's lawyer directory for FDCPA representation, often at no upfront cost

What this cannot do: It cannot cancel a debt, stop all collection calls, or guarantee that a dispute is upheld.

One human next step

Send the request by trackable mail, keep the delivery confirmation, and log every contact afterwards — that log is the evidence a regulator or a lawyer needs.
