HOUSING / SCREENING

The Screening Score Denied You. Ask the Company for the File

Tenant screening companies are consumer reporting agencies, which means you can see the report, dispute what is wrong, and require a corrected version be sent to the landlord.

Why the screening company, not the landlord, is the right target

The landlord usually receives a score or recommendation. The underlying file and its errors are the screening company's responsibility.

A national settlement already stopped one major vendor from showing scores or accept/deny recommendations for housing-voucher applicants — which shows the industry's practices are contestable.

The protocol

  1. Ask the landlord, in writing, which screening company was used and whether a report was pulled.
  2. Request your free file from that company, plus the score and any recommendation shown to the landlord.
  3. List what is wrong with dates, amounts, and identities, and attach the documents that correct it.
  4. Dispute in writing and ask that the corrected report be sent to the landlord.
  5. Keep the acknowledgment and record whether the landlord reconsidered.

What the tool does

Build a tenant screening dispute packet It runs locally in this browser and sends nothing.

Free path, in order (no cost):

  1. The screening company's dispute address — free, and the file is yours to see
  2. A local fair-housing centre or the National Fair Housing Alliance
  3. HUD's fair-housing complaint route (free to file)

What this cannot do: It cannot block an eviction, compel a repair, or guarantee a screening outcome.
