BENEFITS / LANGUAGE ACCESS

The Form Arrived in a Language You Do Not Read. There Is a Free Fix

Federal agencies and recipients of federal funds must provide meaningful language access. Asking by name for an interpreter, a translated notice, or more time is a right, not a favour.

Why asking is the whole intervention

Language access is usually delivered on request, and the request has to reach the right office. Many people simply try to cope with the English form and lose the benefit.

Agencies must not require you to bring your own interpreter, and using a family member can create errors in your case.

The protocol

  1. Write the notice number, programme, date, and the language you need.
  2. Call the agency's main line and ask for an interpreter in your language before discussing the case.
  3. Ask for the notice and forms in your language, and for more time if a deadline is close.
  4. Record the date, the person or service used, and what was promised.
  5. Follow up in writing if the documents do not arrive before the deadline.

What the tool does

Build a language-access request record It runs locally in this browser and sends nothing.

Cost and free path

Cost: Free: one complete run in this browser, no account. Optional $4 one-time unlock allows unlimited runs of this tool on this browser. The free path and safety guidance never require payment.

Rule status (mixed route): Status, 2026-10-03: language-access obligations for federally funded programmes are in force and unchanged; delivery varies by agency, so ask by name, use the agency's own interpreter service, and record the request.

Automated decision this documents: language access in automated and written eligibility processes

Free path, in order (no cost):

  1. The agency's own interpretation line (free, and they must provide it)
  2. LEP.gov guidance on language-access obligations
  3. 211 for local immigrant and refugee services that help with applications

What this cannot do: It cannot decide your eligibility, act as your representative, or guarantee that an agency will act.

One human next step

Ask for the interpreter first — it is free and immediate on most government lines — then ask for the deadline extension in the same call and confirm it in writing.
