PRICING / LOYALTY PRICING

The Discount Requires the App. Read What the Discount Costs

Loyalty programmes trade a lower price for a stream of data about you — a trade that can be worth making. The check is to read what is collected and whether the price differs by member.

Why the loyalty price is a data price

The discount is funded by what the programme learns: purchase history, basket composition, timing, location, and what you will pay. Some programmes also vary offers by member.

Several jurisdictions explicitly exempt loyalty programmes from personalised-pricing bans, which is exactly why the terms deserve reading rather than assuming.

The protocol

  1. Read the programme's terms and write down what data is collected and shared.
  2. Note whether the programme states that prices or offers may vary by member.
  3. Compare two members' prices on the same item if you can, or check the app price against the shelf.
  4. Decide whether the discount is worth the data, and write the decision down.
  5. If you keep the programme, note how to leave it and what happens to your history.

One human next step

If a programme tells you prices are the same for everyone and your record shows otherwise, that is a deception issue — report it with the comparison attached.
