Your Child's School Bought an AI Tutor. Ask the Right Question

Districts adopt AI tutoring, grading, and monitoring tools quickly, and parents are often told after the fact. A records request gets the specifics in writing.

Why 'it's FERPA-protected' is not an answer

Student data rules control disclosure, not collection. The questions that matter are what is collected, how long it is kept, whether it trains a model, and who can see it.

A written request creates a record with a date, and a district that answers on paper can be held to its answer; a conversation in a hallway cannot.

The protocol

  1. Ask the school, in writing, which AI tools are used for your child and what they do.
  2. Request the vendor's data-processing terms and retention schedule as provided to the district.
  3. Ask whether student work is used to train or improve a model, and whether that can be turned off.
  4. Ask who inside and outside the district can access student-level data.
  5. Keep the dated request and the district's answer with your child's school records.

  3. LawHelp.org for free advice if the district refuses a lawful records request

What this cannot do: It cannot decide the outcome for you.

One human next step

If the district will not answer, escalate in writing to the district's data-privacy officer or superintendent, and raise it at a school board meeting; state student-privacy laws may give you additional rights.
