DEEPFAKE / SCREENSHOT EVIDENCE

A Screenshot Is a Rendering, Not a Record. Verify It Before It Decides Something.

Screenshots are how most people show evidence, and they are also trivial to fabricate or to crop into dishonesty. The record lives on the platform or in the account — that is where to look when a screenshot is being used against someone.

The free tool below runs entirely in this browser — no account, nothing stored or transmitted. Redact anything you would not want kept before you type it.

Why the record beats the image

A screenshot is a picture of a rendering. It can be cropped, composed in a design tool, or taken from a test account, and even a genuine one loses the parts that matter: the account it came from, the exact timestamp, and whether a message was edited or deleted afterwards.

Platforms, banks, and messaging services keep records that a screenshot only imitates. Requesting the record converts a disagreement about an image into a question with a verifiable answer, and it is a request any honest party can satisfy.

The protocol

  1. Identify which system produced what the screenshot shows: a platform, an app, a bank portal, or an email account.
  2. Ask the person relying on the screenshot to export or share the underlying record through that system — a transaction statement, a message export, a support ticket, or an account activity page.
  3. Check the details a screenshot cannot carry: the account name, the full timestamp with timezone, and whether the entry still exists.
  4. If you are the one being accused, request your own record from the same source and compare the two, rather than defending the image.
  5. Record who was asked, what was provided, and when. In disputes, the log of requests is often as useful as the record itself.

What the tool does

Describe the screenshot and what it is being used to prove, and get a verification route: which record exists, who can produce it, and the wording to request it. It runs in this browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Limit first: This is a record-request aid, not a forensic tool and not legal advice. It cannot determine whether a screenshot is genuine; it tells you which source can.

One human next step

If a screenshot is being used in a dispute over money, a claim, or an account action, request the record in writing and keep the request. A consumer-protection agency or, for a legal dispute, a lawyer can say what record is persuasive in your situation.

Research log and safety checks

AI-assist path: not used for a verdict. Screenshot authenticity is not decidable from the image, so the artifact routes to the source of record — an honest structural answer rather than a confidence score (§1.2 UIC-10). §6.10: not a frontier-pace topic.

§0.5 protection result: category is deepfake-media-verification; crisis-adjacent: no; fear/urgency/scarcity toolkit used: no. The protective function is free and the paid feature is convenience only.
