DEBT / STUDENT-LOAN SERVICING

The Servicer Split Your Student-Loan Payment. Reconcile the Allocation

A total payment can be credited across several loans, fees, interest, principal, or a future due date. Compare the receipt with the loan-level history and the instructions you gave the servicer.

Why the total received can hide a loan-level mismatch

Federal loan servicers publish payment-allocation rules, and an overpayment or saved instruction can affect which loan group receives the funds. A matching bank withdrawal alone does not show where the servicer applied it.

The servicer's transaction history, current loan terms, and any written payment directions are the records to compare. Older account guidance or another borrower's payment schedule cannot establish your present balance.

The protocol

  1. Save the payment receipt, statement, and loan-group history; redact full account numbers before sharing any copy.
  2. Record the amount and date withdrawn, each loan group's amount credited, and the fees, interest, and principal entries shown.
  3. Check whether you gave special payment directions or whether an overpayment advanced a future due date.
  4. Send a secure written question to the servicer asking how the payment was allocated and what direction or term it applied.
  5. If the account still appears wrong, use the servicer's dispute channel and Federal Student Aid's Submit Feedback route; do not skip a scheduled payment based only on this record.

What the tool does

Build a student-loan payment-allocation review record. It runs locally in this browser and sends nothing.

Limit first: This is a record-keeping aid, not financial or legal advice. It cannot recalculate a contractual balance, forgive a loan, stop an automatic payment, or establish a servicer violation.

Cost and free path

Cost: Free: one complete local run in this browser, with no account or upload; the tool does not transmit what you enter. Optional $4 one-time convenience unlock for unlimited runs of this tool on this browser; never a subscription. The protective answer and every free-path step remain free.

Rule status (federal route): Federal route, checked 2026-10-10: federal student-loan servicers publish payment allocation instructions, but the applicable loan terms, saved payment directions, and current account history control the specific calculation.

Automated decision this documents: automated allocation of a student-loan payment among loan groups, fees, interest, principal, or future installments

Free path, in order (no cost):

  1. Your federal-loan servicer's secure message and payment-history request route
  2. StudentAid.gov's servicer and borrower-help resources
  3. Federal Student Aid's free Submit Feedback route for a federal-loan servicing problem

What this cannot do: It cannot recalculate a contractual balance, forgive a loan, stop an automatic payment, or establish a servicer violation.

One human next step

Contact the current servicer shown in your StudentAid.gov account and request a loan-by-loan payment history. If the federal-loan issue remains unresolved, use Federal Student Aid's Submit Feedback route and follow its document instructions.
