COST / INSURANCE DATA

Your Car Reported Your Driving. Ask What It Changed

Usage-based insurance collects location, speed, braking, and time-of-day data. Several states now require disclosures when telematics affects rates — and you can ask what yours produced.

Why driving data is priced, not just stored

The data is used to score risk and set discounts or surcharges. If it was shared with other insurers or used beyond the discount programme, that should appear in the disclosures.

You can usually leave a telematics programme, and you can ask for the data in writing before deciding.

The protocol

  1. Find whether your policy includes a telematics or usage-based programme.
  2. Request, in writing, the data collected and the period it covers.
  3. Ask what effect the data had on your premium, and whether it was shared with other parties.
  4. Ask how to leave the programme and what happens to the collected data.
  5. Keep the answers with your policy documents and re-check at renewal.

What the tool does

Build a telematics data request It runs locally in this browser and sends nothing.

Cost and free path

Cost: Free: one complete run in this browser, no account. Optional $4 one-time unlock allows unlimited runs of this tool on this browser. The free path and safety guidance never require payment.

Rule status (mixed route): Status, 2026-10-03: telematics rating and data-sharing disclosure is state-regulated and uneven; several states now require disclosure when usage-based data affects rates, and the state insurance department is the authority.

Automated decision this documents: telematics-based risk scoring and rate setting

Free path, in order (no cost):

  1. Your state insurance department's consumer complaint service (free, and they regulate rating)
  2. The insurer's own privacy and data-request channel, in writing
  3. NAIC's consumer resources for insurance questions

What this cannot do: It cannot force a payer to pay, guarantee an appeal outcome, or tell you which care is right for you.

One human next step

If the premium effect does not match what you were told, or the data was shared beyond the programme, file a complaint with your state insurance department — complaints about rating are what they regulate.
