Open the companion tool →Why scammers use AI avatars in rental listings
AI portrait generators produce high-resolution, professional-looking faces in seconds, allowing scammers to create believable landlord or agent personas without stealing real people's photos.
While facial features look convincing at first glance, current generators consistently fail on fine details like pupil roundness, ear jewelry asymmetry, background perspective, and hair boundary blending.
The protocol
- Examine the eyes: check if pupils are perfectly circular or carry irregular shapes/reflections.
- Look at symmetry in accessories: compare earrings, glasses frames, and collar lines across both sides.
- Inspect background transition: look for blurred or melting patterns where hair meets the background.
- Cross-reference the agent's name and license number with state real estate licensing registries.
What the tool does
Evaluate host or agent profile pictures for synthetic generation artifacts and verify property credentials.
Limit first: Visual inspection builds confidence but cannot guarantee identity. Always inspect property or verify licenses independently.

If a listing appears fake or uses stolen/synthetic credentials, report it to the platform (e.g., Airbnb, Zillow) and your local consumer protection bureau.
